Description

The burrowing owl, a small owl that breeds in the open prairies of Alberta and Saskatchewan and winters in the southern US and Mexico, is listed as Endangered in both Canada and in Alberta. In Alberta, burrowing owl populations have shown a steep and continuing decline. This recovery plan provides background information on the burrowing owl, describes the threats facing the owl, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain or restore the species.

Description

Declining populations of burrowing owls have led to the species being classified as Endangered in Alberta and nationally. Population recovery is believed to be possible, with protection and management of breeding habitat being an important component in achieving this. Spatial identification of potential breeding habitat is the first step in this process. This study provides one of the first spatially explicit descriptions of potential critical habitat for the burrowing owl recovery team. However, this research was designed only to narrow the potential areas within which critical habitat could be designated, which is one of the first steps in the identification process. This report addresses some of the limitations of the burrowing owl habitat suitability model and provides guidance for potential conservation applications, such as critical habitat identification and habitat stewardship.

Description

The western burrowing owl has declined significantly over much of its range in Canada and the United States. The species is listed as Threatened in the Alberta Wildlife Act and is considered At Risk within the province. Various conservation measures have been recommended including expanded monitoring of population distribution, productivity and trends. Previous surveys of burrowing owls in Alberta have typically used trend block survey methods. In comparison, roadside surveys require less personnel and equipment, and reduce the need to gain access to private lands.

Surveys were conducted in the Brooks (K-blocks) and Hanna (H-blocks) areas during June 12-21, 2000. Nine burrowing owl nest sites were located in the K-blocks, and two nests in the H-blocks. Specific location details for all nests found have been removed from this document to provide additional nest site and landholder confidentiality.
