Description

The Vertical Series type of Indigenous rock art is found at only a handful of sites across the northern Great Plains. Discovery of a new site is therefore significant. In 2012 the Glenwood Erratic in southwestern Alberta was reported as a heavily vandalized rock art site. Inspection, however, revealed no rock art where originally specified. Instead, previously unknown rock art was found on many surfaces of the erratic, all of which is faint and challenging to describe. The age of the artwork is estimated at between 500 to 1,000 years before present. The identity of the cultural group responsible is unknown.

Three new radiocarbon dates were obtained from the oldest deposits at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump , in southern Alberta in an effort to more accurately bracket the earliest utilization of this significant site. This paper reports on those dates and places the early use of the site by Mummy Cave complex cultures in a broader chronological context of bison jump use on the Great Plains.

This report presents the final results of the 1984 field season at the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump site, which represents the second season of archaeological research by the staff of Alberta Culture at this World Heritage Site. This multi-year research project is designed to undertake mitigative investigations preparatory to the installation of an interpretive centre and attendant facilities, as well as to conduct research oriented studies which will provide some of the information required to assemble an interpretive programme for the site. The majority of the 1984 field season was devoted to the research-oriented objectives of the project which have been focused on the-poorly understood campsite deposits located on the prairie flats below the kill site deposits. The primary data sources consulted are the published historic and ethnographic accounts of the four tribes given serious consideration: the Blackfoot, the Kutenai, the Gros Ventre and the Snake or Shoshoni.

This document constitutes the final report of archaeological activities during the 1983 field season by staff of Alberta Culture at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The site has been identified by the provincial government or the development of an on-site public interpretive program. One of the primary purposes was to conduct archaeological studies of the site areas where development would cause surface disturbance, such as parking lots, access roads, the building site and smaller related facilities. A second purpose in initiating a multi-year archaeological project at the site was to begin acquiring information about the site which is not available from previous studies and which is necessary to the interpretive program planned for the site.
