Description

Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) has developed environmental management frameworks for air quality and surface water quality under the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. These frameworks are designed to maintain flexibility and proactively manage the cumulative effects of human activity on ambient air quality and surface water quality within the South Saskatchewan Region. The frameworks do not replace existing regulatory processes. They contribute to managing growth pressures on air, land and water over the coming decades, adding to and complementing existing policies, legislation, regulations and management tools. The frameworks are policy documents that will be given legal authority as specified in the regional plan, and through the mandates and legislation of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development and, potentially, other government departments.

The Bow River begins in the Rocky Mountains and runs through foothills onto the prairies, ending at the confluence with the Oldman River, where it becomes the South Saskatchewan River. The river is an important source of water for municipal use, livestock, irrigation, fisheries, recreational use and hydroelectric power. Between the Bearspaw and Bassano Dams, population, industry and agriculture result in large volumes of water being withdrawn from the Bow. The high reliance on the Bow River in this area makes it important to understand the quality of the water available and to plan effectively for its use. One component of this planning is water quality modelling.

The Bow River begins in the Rocky Mountains and runs through foothills onto the prairies, ending at the confluence with the Oldman River, where it becomes the South Saskatchewan River. The river is an important source of water for municipal use, livestock, irrigation, fisheries, recreational use and hydroelectric power. Between the Bearspaw and Bassano Dams, water needs from population, industry and agriculture result in large bodies of water being withdrawn from the Bow. The high reliance on the Bow River in this area makes it important to understand the quality of the water available and to plan effectively for its use. One component of this planning is analysing the water quality data that has been gathered for this reach.

Description

This study was initialized to test and validate an innovative survey technique adopting the BioSonics DT-X echosounder, which has been successfully applied for surveying vegetation and sediment in many estuary and lake systems, but not for a shallow riverine system, like the Bow River in Alberta, Canada. The site for this study was selected to be a 500 meter reach on the Bow River just below the City of Calgary’s major wastewater treatment plant, the Bonnybrook Plant, where substantial levels of aquatic vegetation exist during summer. The BioSonics survey was performed three times under different growing seasons in 2010.

Alberta Envrionmental Protection has intensively monitored the Bow River ecosystem since 1989. This work was designed to determine the distribution of contaminants from the Canada Creosote site in the aquatic ecosystem, to protect domestic water supplies and to ensure the human consumption of fish was safe. This report evaluates changes in water quality over the two years since the containment system was intalled.

Description

In November 1989, a liquid mixture of various contaminants including the wood preservatives creosote and pentachlorophenol (PCP) was found seeping into the Bow River adjacent to the abandoned Canada Creosote site in Calgary. A temporary berm was built in the river around the seepage area on November 6-9, 1989, and rebuilt on October 9-19, 1990. Contaminants were removed from the bermed area. A permanent barrier to contaminant flow was installed along the entire shoreline between April 29 and May 3, 1995, and a system designed to prevent the flow of contaminated groundwater to the river around the barrier was operational by February 8, 1996.
