This study assesses and identifies flood and river-related hazards along 118 km of the Bow River, as well as 7 km of Policeman Creek, 1 km of Exshaw Creek, 5 km of Bighill Creek, and 5 km of Jumpingpound Creek. The study area extends from Banff National Park to Bearspaw Dam, including through Canmore, Cochrane, Exshaw, Ghost Lake, Kananaskis Improvement District, Lac des Arcs, Municipal District of Bighorn, Rocky View County, and Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

Description

The Subalpine Natural Subregion is a Rocky Mountain altitudinal vegetation zone extending from an elevation of 1575 m to 2175 m at its southernmost occurrence and 1365 m to 2000 m near Grande Cache. This approximation of the guide represents the analysis of over 3400 plots described in the Subalpine subregion. In this subregion it was found there were distinct differences between the community types and ecological sites between the Central and Northern Foothills and Mountains (west of Sundre, Hinton, Grande Cache and Jasper national park), and the Southern Rocky Mountains (south and west of Calgary and Banff national park). As a result the Subalpine plant communities are identified into two ecosections (south and north). The dominant plant species, canopy cover, environmental conditions and response to grazing, are outlined for each plant community type for each ecosection.

This is a linear disturbance dataset for the Upper North Saskatchewan and Upper Red Deer River Basins of Alberta. This dataset was created to support spatial analyses of linear disturbances in the Upper North Saskatchewan and Upper Red Deer River Basins for the Alberta Environment and Parks report entitled “Ecological response to land use and human activities in the eastern slopes of Alberta's Rocky Mountains: A scientific assessment”. This is a polyline dataset covering the Upper North Saskatchewan and Upper Red Deer River Basins of Alberta, Canada. It shows linear features present in ~2016/2017. Linear disturbances are grouped into five categories using attribution from input data sources. The designated area is intended to support the efforts of Banff National Park to reintroduce bison by providing a buffer area where bison are protected, should they leave the reintroduction area, and until Parks Canada staff can redirect them back into the park.

Description

In August 2016, the first confirmed occurrence of whirling disease in Canada was found in fish from Johnson Lake in Banff National Park and the Bow River Basin. While the disease has no impact on human health, it can severely impact some salmonid fish populations. Alberta Environment and Parks is committed to implementing management strategies to reduce the risk to susceptible fish populations. As a part of this commitment, the Whirling Disease Innovative Research and Learning (WhIRL) Grant Program was created to support research initiatives that will provide novel information on whirling disease in Alberta. A total of $1,000,000 will be allocated in 2018-19 to fund research proposals. This application package provides more information on program eligibility, grant availability, and reporting requirements, and includes the application form.
