Description

This report was prepared by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas to fulfill reporting requirements outlined in the Upper Athabasca Region Surface Water Quality Management Framework for the Upper Athabasca River. This is the first annual report for the Upper Athabasca Region, communicating changes in the central tendency (median) and peak (90th percentile) values for 29 primary and 3 secondary water quality indicators at 1 primary monitoring station (Athabasca River at the Town of Athabasca). This report identifies relevant water quality limits or guidelines that were exceeded from November 1, 2021, to October 31, 2022, at 1 primary station and 9 secondary stations in the Upper Athabasca Region, where applicable. For primary indicators, significant median trigger, peak trigger and/or limit exceedances at the primary station will initiate a management response as per the Upper Athabasca Region Surface Water Quality Management Framework.

Surface Water Quality Management Frameworks establish an approach for monitoring and managing long-term cumulative effects of human activities on water quality in the mainstem rivers. The Surface Water Quality Management Framework for the Lower Athabasca River has been in place since 2012. Following an annual assessment of water quality conditions, a Management Response process is initiated where there has been a significant change in recent water quality conditions relative to historical conditions. This report provides the status of the Government of Alberta’s management response to crossings of water quality triggers in the Lower Athabasca Region since the last Management Response report, published in 2022.

Each annual report communicates the status of surface water quality at the Athabasca River at Old Fort monitoring site for the calendar year indicated.

Surface Water Quality Management Frameworks establish an approach to complement Alberta’s Water for Life Strategy in monitoring and managing long-term cumulative effects of human activities on water quality in the mainstem rivers. The Government of Alberta introduced a Surface Water Quality Management Framework for the Upper Athabasca Region in 2022. Following an annual assessment of water quality conditions, a Management Response process is initiated where there has been a significant change in recent water quality conditions relative to historical conditions. This report provides the status of the Government of Alberta’s management response to crossings of water quality triggers under the Upper Athabasca Region Framework as of December 2023.

This report provides the status of the Government of Alberta’s management response to crossings of air quality triggers as of December 2023. It fulfills commitments made to Albertans in the Lower Athabasca Region Air Quality Management Framework for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Sulphur Dioxide (SO2).
