This report was prepared to fulfill reporting requirements mandated by the Lower Athabasca Region Surface Water Quality Management Framework for the Lower Athabasca River, which supports the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. Each annual report communicates the status of surface water quality at the Athabasca River at Old Fort monitoring site for the calendar year indicated.

Description

This report presents the methods used to generate the web-based Condition on Environment (CoE) content published for chloride (Cl-) concentrations in the surface water of major rivers and their tributaries across Alberta. Accordingly, this report helps fulfill the responsibility of reporting to the public on the condition of Alberta's ambient environment, as required by the province's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. In particular, this report outlines the steps taken to obtain and prepare the data, assess the quality of the data and conduct spatial and temporal analyses of Cl-. The goal of this report is to neither investigate nor summarize potential Cl- sources, but rather to summarize spatial and temporal trend of Cl- concentrations in the surface waters of Alberta's major rivers and tributaries.

It represents one component of work to describe baseline environmental conditions in the Lower Athabasca River prior to the potential release of coke slurry-treated oil sands process affected water (OSPW). The document describes sampling locations and sampling frequency to establish a comprehensive description of baseline environmental conditions in surface water chemistry, benthic sediments, benthic algae, benthic macroinvertebrates, and small-bodied fish.

This report presents the monthly water quality results for the Old Fort monitoring station, Athabasca River, Alberta for 2014. These data are provided to fulfill reporting requirements mandated by the Surface Water Quality Management Framework, which supports the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. The 2014 report is the first report produced by the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency for the Lower Athabasca Region. Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development produced previous reports.
