The memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed by the Alberta government, the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, the Mikisew Cree First Nation and the Fort Chipewyan Métis, solidifies a commitment to work towards establishing a community-based education authority that incorporates Indigenous knowledge, wisdom, tradition and culture directly into the school curriculum.

Description

The regional planning process set out in the Alberta Land Stewardship Act provides for directly-affected Albertans to request a review of a land-use plan. The Government of Alberta received six requests for review of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan Review (LARP). A panel was appointed to consider these requests for review and provide recommendations to the Government of Alberta on whether each of the six applicants is directly and adversely affected by either a specific provision or provisions in the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. This report, released in June 2015, presents the findings and recommendations of the panel.

In August 2013 the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation submitted an application requesting a review of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan, which came into force in September 2012. Application and supporting documentation from the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation requesting a review of the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. One of six requests for reviews of the plan, which came into force in September 2012. As per the Alberta Land Stewardship Act, a person who is directly and adversely affected by a regional plan or an amendment to a regional plan may, within 12 months from the date the regional plan or amendment affecting the person comes into force, request a review of the regional plan or amendment.
