Description

Tolman Bridge, is located in the valley of the Red Deer River, 18 km (10 miles) east of the town of Trochu. The bridge and adjoining Park land are in the north half of section 14, range 22, township 34, west of the Fourth Meridian. The coordinates at the bridge are 51.503N and 113.009W. The elevation ranges from around 600 m at the river to 800 m or so near the top of the river breaks. In a Natural Area Inspection Report dated 25 June 1982 and in the 1989 Trochu 82 P/14, 1:50,000 topographic map, the land southwest of the bridge was designated as the “Tolman Bridge Municipal Park” while that southeast of the bridge was referred to as the “Tolman Bridge Recreation Area”. In an Alberta, Department of the Environment, Parks and Protected Areas Division paper dated 9 May 2000, the areas on both sides of the river are included in “Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park”. Campgrounds are found in both areas and they are patrolled by a Conservation Officer stationed in Drumheller.

The Lepidoptera of the area was studied on 13 different days (30 trap nights) from June 27 to August 15 in the years 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. All collected specimens were databased and information on most is available on the Virtual Museum website of the University of Alberta Strickland Museum (http://www.entomology.ualberta.ca/). No collections were made in the spring or fall and thus many species remain to be documented.

The purpose of the lepidoptera survey in Willmore WP was to provide an annotated summary of the species that occur within the park, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioural information. This information will contribute towards an increased understanding of the species occurring in the park as well as in a broader context of Alberta.

Description

Willmore Wilderness Park is located in the northern portion of Alberta's Rocky Mountains just west of Grand Cache and north of Jasper National Park. Habitats suitable for odonates are found throughout the park and include ponds, peatlands, subalpine lakes and streams. Over the past eight years odonate surveys were a part of the biophysical inventories conducted by Alberta Parks within some of its wildland parks. The western portion of Willmore Wilderness Park was surveyed in the summer of 2007 and the results are briefly presented in this report.

The purpose of this survey was to provide an annotated summary of the odonate species that occur in the park, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioural information. This information will contribute towards an increased understanding of the odonate fauna of the park and, in a broader context, of Alberta.

The Holmes Crossing Sandhills Ecological Reserve (ER) is 8 km southwest and the Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park (WPP) is 9 km east of Fort Assiniboine; both are located within the Central Mixedwood Subregion. Holmes Crossing Sandhills ER occupies 1982 hectares and Fort Assiniboine WPP occupies 7903 ha. The latter area was the focus of a Lepidoptera survey in 2005. Both areas contain a number of vegetated transverse sand dunes dominated by stands of jack pine. Other habitats include aspen forest, dry meadows, fens, marshes, bogs and a series of riparian balsam poplar and alder forests. The purpose of this survey was to provide an annotated summary of the Lepidoptera species that occur in these areas, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioral information. An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung 2001) within three of the wildland parks that are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion, namely Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes. The 2000 survey was the first for these three parks. The next survey was conducted in the summer of 2001 (Macaulay 2002) within two of the wildland parks that are located in the Kazan Upland Subregion, namely La Butte Creek and Fidler-Greywillow.

The Subregion where this wildland park is located contains numerous muskeg ponds, streams and lake habitats. The purpose of the survey was to provide an annotated summary of some of the odonate species that occur in the park, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioral information. The information obtained contributes towards an increased understanding of the odonate fauna found within this wildland park but also within the broader context of Alberta.

In Alberta, the Canadian Shield Ecoregion is restricted to the extreme northeast part of the province (Strong and Leggat 1992). It is subdivided into the Kazan Upland Subregion and the Athabasca Plain Subregion, located to the north and south of Lake Athabasca, respectively. There are several wildland parks that have recently been established in these two subregions. An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung) within three of the wildland parks that are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion, namely Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes. This survey was the first for these three parks. Two parks located in the Kazan Upland Subregion were the focus for an odonate survey in the summer of 2001, namely La Butte Creek and Fildler-Greywillow Wildland Parks.
