Description

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This dataset consists of previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data for which the quality has been assessed in order to apply a quality-weighting approach prior to modelling the bedrock topography surface. It is the data used to produce AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta. Explanatory notes, references, and data sources appear on a supplementary page to accompany Map 602. These notes describe the distribution of physiographic terrain elements of the bedrock surface across Alberta, and the sources and quality of the data that were used to interpolate this surface.

Description

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This grid is a computer-generated geostatistical model of the bedrock topography of Alberta using previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data. The quality of this data has been assessed and then a quality-weighting approach was applied to the dataset prior to interpolation. The surface was modelled using a 500m x 500m grid cell spacing, and as such should not be used for local scale studies. This grid represents the surface portrayed in AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta, and this grid will continue to be updated as part of the Alberta Geological Framework project. This dataset is a GIS version of Map 226, which is a regional synthesis of published and unpublished maps. The data represent 100 m elevation contours of the bedrock subcrop for Alberta. The southern part of Alberta, from 49 to 56 degrees north, was primarily compiled from existing 1:250,000 bedrock topography maps. The interpretation of the remaining northern portion of Alberta was based mostly on limited borehole data and information from existing 1:250,000 hydrogeological maps.

The bedrock topography map of the Peerless Lake area (NTS 84B) shows the elevation of the bedrock surface. In general, the topography of the land surface reflects the bedrock topography. Thus, bedrock highs underlie the Buffalo Head Hills Upland, Peerless Lake Upland and Utikuma Uplands. Major buried valleys lie within the Loon River Lowland in the west-central part and within the Wabasca Lowlands in the south and northeast parts of the map area. The elevation of the bedrock surface ranges from 780 metres above sea level (masl) in the Buffalo Head Hills to 300 masl in the Loon River Lowland. Segments of three major buried valleys are present: the Muskwa Valley in the south, the Red Earth Valley in the Loon River Lowland and Gods Valley in the northeast. The exact shape of these bedrock valleys and their relationships in the areas where they appear to merge is uncertain as a consequence of the scarcity of relevant drillholes. Description

The drift thickness map of the Peerless Lake area (NTS 84B) shows the variation in thickness of unconsolidated sediment lying between the bedrock surface and the present-day land surface, and complements the Drift Thickness of Alberta map (Pawlowicz and Fenton, 1995). The thickness of the drift varies from locally less than 2 metres in Buffalo Head Hills to over 200 metres in the Loon River Lowland in the central part of the map area. Thick drift fills the major paleovalleys, which are the Muskwa Valley, the Red Earth Valley and Gods Valley. The drift is thinnest on the Peerless Lake Upland, the Utikuma Uplands and the Buffalo Head Hills Upland. In general the areas of thin drift correspond to areas where the bedrock topography is high. Exceptions are the hills composed of thick drift, such as the ones located south of Muskwa Lake and southwest of Peerless Lake. A digital grid of the top of the Empress Formation where present, or the topography of the surrounding landscape, where the formation is absent. This includes the units 1 to 3 of the Empress Formation in buried valleys, as well as undifferentiated Empress interfluve sediments resting on the bedrock surface between buried valleys. The unit is originally modelled from borehole data and adjusted to the bedrock surface, the surfaces of units 1, 2, 3 and interfluve units of the Empress Formation, and the present-day land surface. The grid is generated at a 250 metre cell-size resolution, based on 2003 information.

Description

The drift thickness map of the Pelican River area (NTS 83P) shows the variation in thickness of unconsolidated sediment lying between the bedrock surface and the present-day land surface, and complements the regional drift thickness map of Alberta (Pawlowicz and Fenton, 1995). The thickness of the drift varies from less than 20 metres in uplands, such as the Pelican Mountains, to a little over 260 metres in the Wiau Valley in the northeast part of the map area. The thickest drift fills the paleovalleys containing the major valleys: the Wiau Valley and the Leismer Valley in the northeast, and the north-trending Amesbury Valley in the central portion of the area.

The bedrock topography map of the Pelican River area (NTS 83P) shows the elevation of the bedrock surface. In general, the surface topography reflects the bedrock topography: bedrock highs underlie the Pelican, Amadou and May Hills highlands, and the buried valleys lie within the Wabasca and Wandering River plains. The elevation of the bedrock surface ranges from 360 metres above sea level (masl) in the Wabasca Plain to slightly more than 920 masl in the Pelican Mountains. Segments of three major buried valleys are present: the Wiau Valley and the Leismer Valley in the northeast, and the south to northwest-trending Amesbury Valley in the central portion of the area.
