Description

The Policy on Consultation with Metis Settlements on Land and Natural Resource Management was developed in consultation with the Metis Settlements General Council and a working group of Settlement leaders, as well as industry stakeholders. It establishes a formal consultation process between Alberta, project proponents and the Metis Settlements. The policy came into force on April 4, 2016 and was amended in April 2020. Implementation of the policy is consistent with Alberta's approach to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

Description

Under this policy, Government of Alberta seeks to reconcile First Nations' constitutionally-protected rights with other societal interests with a view to substantially address adverse impacts on Treaty rights and traditional uses through a meaningful consultation process. Alberta's management and development of provincial Crown lands and natural resources is subject to its legal and constitutional duty to consult First Nations and, where appropriate, accommodate their interests when Crown decisions may adversely impact their continued exercise of constitutionally protected Treaty rights.

Description

The Government of Alberta’s Policy on Consultation with Metis Settlements on Land and Natural Resource Management, 2015 (Policy) was released in the Spring of 2016. To fully implement the Policy, the Government of Alberta has developed these Guidelines, along with sector-specific consultation matrices (Appendix A of this document). The Guidelines were modeled after the First Nation consultation guidelines, and support clarity of roles, transparency and consistency for all stakeholders involved in the consultation process.

Integrated resource plans (IRPs) provide direction for managing Alberta's public land and resources. When IRPs are developed, information on resources and activities is gathered and the views of interested government departments, municipal authorities, interest groups and the general public are considered. After it has been approved by the Economic Planning Cabinet Committee, an IRP is implemented by government agencies and the private sector. IRPs are flexible. As new information becomes available or situations change, revisions or plan amendments can be made to an approved plan.
