Description

This is the standard operating procedure for measuring ambient particulate matter. It provides guidance for the operation, calibration and maintenance of the Thermo Scientific Model 5030 and 5030i Synchronized Hybrid Ambient Real-time Particulate (SHARP) Monitors. The SOP provides procedures consistent with national and international standards to Alberta Environment and Parks staff, Airsheds and other organizations across Alberta for monitoring PM under OSM.

Each specification standard sheet includes the following categories: field of application; air monitoring objectives; operational methods; minimum specifications; operational requirements; calibration requirements; reporting requirements; and additional information.

Description

The ACCU System is an optional Automatic Cartridge Collection Unit apparatus that permits capture of particulate and gaseous samples in conjunction with the operation of the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM). The TEOM microprocessor controls the ACCU System and permits the operator to schedule timers to control the sampling times. The procedure described in this document is for the operation of the ACCU sampler in conjunction with TEOM operations within the NAPS and AENV networks.

The Environmentally protected Beta Attenuation Monitor (E-BAM) provides real time mass measurement of selected size particles in ambient air samples. This instrument is used in national and local air monitoring networks to provide continuous data on the mass concentrations of various potential measurements including total suspended particulates (TSP), particulate matter (PM) of 10μm, 2.5μm, or 1μm aerodynamic diameter and less in ground level ambient air. The procedure described in this document is for the operation of E-BAM samplers reporting data to the NAPS and AENV network.

Description

To obtain timely data for the purpose of air quality assessment, air quality trend reporting and to meet the requirements for inclusion of the data in provincial and national air quality databases, a method of analyzing particulate matter (PM) in ambient air is used. The commercially available Partisol™ Model 2000 low flow rate sampler consisting of a hub station and up to three satellite stations is used in this method.

The Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) provides real time mass measurement of selected size particles in ambient air samples. The Grimm particulate monitor is used by Alberta Environment (AENV) in the Mobile Air Monitoring Laboratory (MAML). This monitor is used to collect real time particulate data, which will indicate the approximate levels of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 during emergency response events. This data is not included in provincial or national air quality databases. This method is capable of measurement updates at a rate of once every minute or faster.
