Performance specification standards have been developed as part of the revision and update of the Alberta Air Monitoring Directive. The specification standard sheets were designed to provide a reference for approved methods and minimum performance specifications to assure the consistency and reliability of continuous ambient air quality measurement in the province. Each specification standard sheet includes the following categories: field of application; air monitoring objectives; operational methods; minimum specifications; operational requirements; calibration requirements; reporting requirements; and additional information.

Description

To obtain timely data for the purpose of air quality assessment, air quality trend reporting, air quality index reporting and to meet the requirements for inclusion of the data in provincial and national air quality databases, a continuous method of analyzing Ozone concentration in ambient air samples is used. This method is capable of measurement updates at a rate of once every five minutes or faster. Readings from instruments of this method enables the calculation of hourly averaged concentration of ozone. Commercially available ozone analyzers are used in the method.

They are intended to provide protection of the environment and human health to an extent technically and economically feasible, as well as socially and politically acceptable. This document provides objective levels for ozone, as well as a short description of the substance and the effects of exposure to ozone on humans, other animals, and vegetation.
