Description

The Milk River Basin Species at Risk Conservation Strategy outlines a process by provide appropriate management on critical parts of the landscape to achieve multi-species conservation. This year's report includes a summary of existing information on species at risk, identification of data gaps, results of fish and wildlife inventories from within the project area, and a species selection process. Also included are habitat suitability models for project management species, maps showing habitat distribution throughout the Milk River Basin, descriptions of natural processes within the grassland natural region, and a demonstration of beneficial management practices.

The species is fairly common in Alberta, but their general status was re-evaluated in 2010 from Secure to Sensitive due to significant annual declines in their population. Porsild's bryum is a small moss that is naturally rare and widely scattered throughout the northern hemisphere. In Canada, there are a total of 17 known populations with six of these occurring in Alberta. The Alberta Porsild's Bryum Recovery Plan identifies actions required to maintain or restore the current provincial status of the species. This report was commissioned to analyze habitat, substrate, and hydrological data collected from several Porsild's bryum populations and subpopulations in Alberta, and to interpret the findings as they relate to the goals and objectives of the provincial recovery plan for the species.

There appears to have been a long-term decline in abundance of the species in Alberta, likely related to significant historical persecution and habitat loss. At writing the prairie rattlesnake had a status of May Be At Risk. This report summarizes historical and recent information on the species as background information for a reassessment of its status.
