This surveillance report presents emergency department visits, hospitalizations, prescription drug dispensing from community pharmacies, emergency medical services, naloxone kit dispensing, supervised consumption service visits, and mortality data associated with opioids and other drugs in Alberta. Results are subject to change. The time period covered in this report is January 2016 to December 2020.

Alberta Health undertook a review of the Chief Medical Examiner's case files on all unintentional opioid-related deaths in 2017, supplemented by administrative data from Alberta Health. The purpose of the review was to learn more about the people dying from opioid-related deaths and the circumstances of those deaths, and to identify trends and inform potential interventions to help stem the increasing number of opioid-related deaths in Alberta.

Description

The Swan Hills Treatment Centre is a facility for the safe disposal of special wastes located approximately 12 kilometers northeast of the town of Swan Hills. A furnace malfunction in October 1996 caused the release of a portion of process gases containing toxic substances into the ambient air. A 1997 Alberta Health human health risk assessment study led to the establishment of several food consumption advisories and the establishment of a long-term environmental monitoring and human exposure assessment program. This report discusses the results from several ongoing studies, reviews the food consumption advisories, and makes recommendations for continued monitoring and some changes to the wild game consumption advisories. It was recommended that the current fish consumption advisories remain the same.

This report presents the results from the second West Nile virus (WNv) Seroprevalence Study, undertaken by Alberta Health and Wellness during March through June 2007. Since most WNv infections do not lead to clinical cases, seroprevalence studies are conducted to estimate how many Albertans have actually been infected with the virus and how the virus is spreading in the province. The studies also help to increase our understanding of the cycles of WNv to help predict yearly clinical infection rates. A secondary objective of the study is to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of Albertans about WNv and about measures used to protect against infection.
