Reports on a project to assess the demand for local food available in Alberta through farmers’ markets, farm retail and restaurants offering locally-sourced ingredients. Also includes a short section for community supported agriculture (CSA) box programs. The study also examined the preferred methods of communications with farmers or suppliers of local food, and the degree of consumer acceptance of local food as "food grown or made in Alberta."

In 2004, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (established a baseline estimate of the value of five alternative market sectors for agricultural products and services and investigated their growth potential. The study was repeated in 2008 for three of the sectors. This 2012 report represents the third tracking study in the series, monitoring two of the original markets – farmers' markets and farm retail – and establishing baselines for two new ones – restaurants chosen because they serve food made from Alberta ingredients and community-supported agriculture or community-shared agriculture box programs.

In 2004, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development established a baseline estimate of the value of five alternative market sectors for agricultural products and services and investigated their growth potential. The study was repeated in 2008 for three of the sectors. Reports findings of a study conducted in 2008 to obtain information on four alternative market sectors for agricultural products and services: farmers’ markets, farm retail, farm activities, and the local food movement. The purpose of the study was two-fold: to obtain current information on each alternative market, including growth over the period from 2004 to 2008, along with continuing growth potential; and to obtain benchmark information on the proportion of these alternative markets that is made up of Alberta grown or made foods and to investigate Alberta consumers’ perceptions of local food.
