The Indigenous Lake Monitoring Program (ILMP) was developed in response to Indigenous communities’ concerns about the quality of lakes of local importance as well as the Community-Based Monitoring & Knowledge teams’ mandate to explore opportunities to work together with Indigenous communities to advance environmental stewardship. The ILMP aims to support and enable stewardship and management of Alberta’s lakes based on the best available Indigenous and scientific knowledge. From 2016-21, staff from CBM&K, Watershed Sciences and Watershed Monitoring units within the Airshed & Watershed Stewardship Branch worked with community technicians from four First Nations (Bigstone Cree Nation, Cold Lake First Nations, Whitefish Lake First Nation, Dene Tha' First Nation) to collect and report on water chemistry, physical measurements, and biological samples on seven lakes in Northern Alberta. The North Saskatchewan Regional Advisory Council was appointed by Cabinet to provide strategic advice in the development of the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan. In its advice submitted to the government in December 2014, the council provided 69 recommendations in six topic areas: managing wetlands and lakes as part of watershed management; supporting biodiversity in the region; inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in land-use planning; community growth and community land-use planning; management of outdoor recreation; and economic development.

Reports the findings of a survey of air quality following a fire which occurred in February 2012 at a landfill operated by the Tsuu T'ina First Nation adjacent to the southwest boundary of the City of Calgary.

Description

Due to complaints received into Alberta Environment, air quality was monitored in the vicinity of Mirror rail yard in the spring of 2010 and winter of 2010/2011 to assess the impact of emissions from idling diesel engines within the rail yard. Analysis results from a limited number of samples collected during the spring indicated that areas downwind of the rail yard may be impacted by emissions other than idling at the yard. To further investigate the impact of activities within the yard on nearby air quality a winter sampling campaign was conducted.

For the current study, air quality surveys were conducted in the vicinity of eleven gas plants and industrial areas in the area of Caroline and Rocky Mountain House. The objectives of the monitoring were twofold: to identify and determine the concentrations of air pollutants near industrial facilities in the survey area; and to support ongoing work of the regional compliance and approval staff.

The toxicity of arsenic is a subject of considerable research, as well as some controversy, particularly in relation to its potential to cause cancer. In order to better understand and assess the significance of the elevated cancer risk from arsenic exposure, Alberta Health and Wellness retained Cantox Environmental Inc. (CEI) to review previous research and assess the potential cancer risk using refined methodology consistent with that typically used by CEI. The work was meant to serve as a “second opinion” of the lifetime cancer risk that could be presented to people living in the Wood-Buffalo region from arsenic exposure.
