Description

This report summarizes the state of knowledge of agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) research and identifies preliminary gaps and sets out a science plan to contribute to efficient funding of GHG projects. It also provides the initial groundwork for a farm-level GHG assessment, to allow producers to identify future changes they can make to reduce GHG emissions and provide producers a better idea of their GHG management options.

Reports on the results of a series of focus groups with farmers held by Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development to examine whether global climate patterns and more extreme weather events across the Canadian landscape were concerning producers. Discussions focused on the producers' risks, opportunities, and capabilities due to climate change. Also discussed were their views on what support they need in the management of risks associated with climate change.

The report is meant for use as a guide to assist people involved in a professional capacity in land reclamation. It delineates three major regions in the province in an attempt to establish criteria that would apply to each area in general, while recognizing that there are differences within each of the regions. It then discusses soil survey and sampling for baseline and post-disturbance activity, and looks at analytical requirements required for baseline characterization and for disturbed and orphaned areas. The remainder of the report then looks at the physical, chemical, and biological criteria for evaluating the suitability of soil materials for revegetation.

In 2003, the Governor of the State of Montana sent a letter to the American Section of the International Joint Commission requesting that it review the 1921 Order respecting the measurement and apportionment of the St. Mary and Milk Rivers. In January 2004, the Governor of the State of Montana, at the request of the IJC, provided to the Commission a letter and attachment setting out the reasons for Montana's request. The Government of Alberta (August 2004) submission to the IJC consisted of an overall submission as well as submissions from Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.

Groundwater quality in the Battersea Drainage Basin, an irrigated area of southern Alberta with a high density of intensive livestock operations, was monitored from 1995 to 2001. The goal was to characterize groundwater flow and quality, and to determine whether groundwater quality changed between this period. The information gathered in this report will be used to identify and promote the most appropriate management practices to minimize water contamination, and to serve as a baseline to monitor the impact of implementation of beneficial management practices in the basin.

The study collects information regarding the quality and quantity of additions and deletions to the agricultural land base. The current study monitors changes from 1986-1990. This is the fourth in a series of studies which have monitored land use changes since 1976.
