Reports the findings of an opportunity analysis of Alberta's co-packing sector. The analysis was conducted to determine the viability of co-packing and to identify considerations and examples for successful co-packing businesses and recommendations on effective business models to foster growth in the food, natural health and personal care sectors in Alberta. This analysis includes a literature review of the impact co-packing services have on small to medium-sized businesses and fourteen interviews with co-packers and stakeholders conducted from January to March 2020. The opportunity analysis has been sorted into three sections: an overview of the North American and Alberta co-packing industry, the considerations for viable business models and best practices, and resources and supports.

The Government of Alberta, through the Department of Agriculture and Forestry (AF), regulates forest management on the Crown Land of Alberta. Reforestation in Alberta is the responsibility, by law, of those who harvest trees on Crown Land. Companies that harvest trees are required to report the result of their reforestation activities to the government annually (by May 15). Reforestation activities and their associated results are audited annually by AF and this information is used to ensure that forestry activities are conducted in a sustainable manner and in compliance with legislation.

In July 2017 federal, provincial and territorial ministers of agriculture, endorsed the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. Consultation and engagement sessions were held in winter 2018 to obtain feedback on what the suite of the Partnership-funded programs in Alberta should look like. Consultation during this period included three facilitated sessions in Edmonton, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie with representatives of industry organizations. As well, an online survey was made available to all agriculture stakeholders to get a more broad scope of opinions.
