Description

In Alberta, equalized assessment is the means of comparing property wealth in a uniform manner for all municipalities. Alberta uses an ad valorem assessment and tax system where property taxes are based on wealth and wealth is measured by the value of property expressed as an assessment. Equalizing an assessment is simply a process of adjusting each municipality's taxable assessment to a common year in accordance with current legislation and policy. The equalization process results in a common provincial assessment base that is used to determine the amount of requisition for each requisitioning body.

A May 2017 report by the Bow River Working Group provided advice on new reservoir storage on the Bow River upstream of Calgary to reduce flood and drought risk, and identified three reservoir options that warranted further study. From November 2018 to spring 2020, the Alberta government completed a conceptual assessment of the 3 water storage options. This package contains the conceptual assessment’s final report and its appendices.

The assessment also outlines the potential costs if the federal government’s carbon pricing policy were applied in Alberta. This report shows the expected economic impacts of the Climate Leadership Plan on Alberta’s total economy, key industrial sectors and households. Four economic scenarios or cases were evaluated, with outcomes forecasted through to 2030.

The report presents results of a water quality monitoring program completed on the Athabasca River. During the winter of 2015, Alberta Environment and Parks conducted a synoptic survey on the Athabasca River. The purpose of the study was threefold: to evaluate winter spatial patterns in water quality along the length of the Athabasca River; to assess the cumulative effects of industrial and municipal point-source discharges on the Athabasca River during winter low flow, while considering contributions from major tributaries; and to compare current water quality conditions in the Athabasca River to data collected in 1990-1993. A synoptic survey is a comprehensive spatial survey that aims to sample the same ‘parcel’ of water as it flows downstream in a river basin.

This report provides a look back at delivery of the Environmental Monitoring Technician Training Pilot in 2016-17, highlighting the success, challenges, observations and learnings. As part of a continuous improvement process, this information will help shape design and delivery in 2017-18 and the full program review after Year Three.
