Description

This wildlife status report looks at the woodland caribou. The woodland subspecies of the caribou is distributed across the forested and mountainous regions of Canada, including northern and west-central Alberta. The woodland caribou is included on the list of species that may be at risk in Alberta. This report summarizes past and ongoing research on woodland caribou ecology in Alberta as a step in updating its status designation. The report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

The ferruginous hawk is a large raptor within the Grassland Natural Region of Alberta; inhabiting areas dominated by native prairie. The provincial ferruginous hawk population has been estimated every five years since 1982, except between the years 1993 and 1999. The population estimate is based on the number of active nests detected during each inventory year. During the 2010 inventory, a population estimate of 643 ± 169 breeding pairs of ferruginous hawks was calculated. This population estimate is similar to the 2005 estimate, which implies that the population is relatively stable at low numbers. Overall, Alberta's ferruginous hawk population still remains significantly lower than the 1992, and thus, it is essential to take management actions to assist with the recovery of this species.

This wildlife status report looks at the pygmy whitefish, a small, slim whitefish in Alberta that has been collected in specific habitats from only two locations in the province: Upper Waterton Lake and a restricted portion of the upper Athabasca River. Recent surveys indicate that it appears to be relatively common in Upper Waterton Lake and relatively uncommon in the Athabasca River. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Also included are habitat suitability models for project management species, maps showing habitat distribution throughout the Milk River Basin, descriptions of natural processes within the grassland natural region, and a demonstration of beneficial management practices.

Description

The 2000 edition of the General Status of Alberta Wild Species represents a substantial improvement in the knowledge base of wild species in Alberta. Preliminary status assessments were prepared for 4 735 species of birds, mammals, herpetiles (amphibians and reptiles), freshwater fish, molluscs (gastropods and bivalves), odonates (dragonflies and damselflies), lepidopterans (butterflies and skippers), vascular plants, nonvascular plants and fungi in Alberta. Of these groups, Alberta, along with all other provinces and territories, agreed to report on eight to Environment Canada so that a national evaluation could be undertaken (see Background of the Present General Status Evaluation Exercise). These groups included the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fish, butterflies, orchids and ferns. The status of species in these categories is provided here.

Description

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an invasive alien prion agent that recently arrived in eastern Alberta. The prion causes fatal infections in cervids and significantly alters the population structure and viability of local deer herds. There is no natural barrier to further spread, no treatment to eliminate infections, and no feasible live animal test to identify infected deer. CWD has significant environmental, social, and economic effects by altering major ecosystem structure and function, as well as decreasing recreational harvest and guiding/outfitting activity. Alberta was proactive in looking for occurrence of CWD and initially proactive in responding once it was found. Current programs focus on monitoring the ongoing geographic spread and numerical increase in eastern deer populations. Hunter harvest is the primary tool to find infected deer. Population reduction is the only known tool to manage CWD in wild deer.
