The annual report of the ministry of Agriculture and Forestry contains financial information of the ministry and a comparison of actual performance results to desired results set out in the ministry business plan, which was published as part of the previous year's budget. The report also includes financial statements for the entities making up the ministry and for which the minister is responsible.

The Government of Alberta, through the Department of Agriculture and Forestry (AF), regulates forest management on the Crown Land of Alberta. Reforestation in Alberta is the responsibility, by law, of those who harvest trees on Crown Land. Companies that harvest trees are required to report the result of their reforestation activities to the government annually (by May 15). Reforestation activities and their associated results are audited annually by AF and this information is used to ensure that forestry activities are conducted in a sustainable manner and in compliance with legislation.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry commissioned an independent review of its Wildfire Management Branch and the extraordinary wildfire activity the organization faced in 2019. The review focused on the operational aspects of the 2019 response to the spring wildfires, the impact on and perspectives of residents, partners and stakeholders; and an evaluation of the Wildfire Management program in its entirety including the connection of the 2019 experience to past fire seasons and reviews. The final report includes a number of recommendations and opportunities for improvement. Also included in this record is a four-page document outlining next steps to be taken by Agriculture and Forestry in response to the recommendations in the report.

In forest mensuration, forest inventory and forest modeling, it is common to compare the agreement between two sets of quantitative measurements. One set could be from a commonly-accepted reference method, the other from a new or alternative method, device, or model. If the measurements are statistically the same or practically "close enough" to each other, the more complex, more destructive and/or costly method can be replaced by the simpler, less destructive and/or more efficient method. Traditional statistical approaches used for such comparisons based on bias, correlation coefficient, coefficient of determination and significance tests are inadequate and not really relevant for agreement analysis. Various agreement measures proposed for agreement analysis are also insufficient and not pertinent in many respects. In March and April 2016, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry sought public and stakeholder input on proposed amendments to the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and associated regulations. The amendments would update the fine levels and structure to align with other similar provincial legislation, and clarify wording to better reflect and support current operational practices in the field. A survey was distributed to key stakeholders, while the general public was notified of the survey through public consultation websites. This report summarizes the input received through completed survey submissions.

Description

As a part of an integrated provincial growth and yield initiative (PGYI), this document describes the minimum standards for accepting existing permanent sample plots (PSPs) and measuring new PSPs in Alberta. Variables required to be measured at plot and tree levels are described, along with relevant reporting formats for a centralized provincial database. Priorities for establishing and measuring new PSPs in Alberta where significant data gaps exist are identified. The primary goal of this document is to ensure the quality, usefulness and compatibility of collected PSP datasets from different agencies, for the purpose of modeling the growth and yield of natural and post-harvest stands under existing and emerging conditions in a collaborative, efficient, consistent, compatible and scientifically defensible manner.
