This stewardship report describes the progress made by Sundre Forest Products Inc. towards achieving the commitments set out in the 2015 forest management plan (FMP), which was approved by the Alberta government on May 31, 2018. For the purposes of this report, the reporting timeframe is May 1, 2017, to April 30, 2022. The report provides details of SFP’s progress in implementing the forest management plan's preferred forest management scenario, as well as the status of the values, objectives, indicators and targets. Stewardship reports are a mechanism to compile, analyze, and report on approved FMP commitments.

Description

Flood damage estimates are required for evaluating the cost effectiveness of projects designed to alleviate flood impacts. The Provincial Flood Damage Assessment Tool enables the standardized calculation of flood damages for varying levels of inundation within a community. Using this tool, a community-specific damage model for different flood frequencies has been developed for the Town of Sundre. Direct damages are presented as being caused by overland flooding and sewer backup/groundwater flooding. Indirect damages includes residential displacement, business interruption, and intangible impacts to households.

In response to a pipeline break and subsequent discharge of light crude oil into the Red Deer River near Sundre, Plains Midstream Canada and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development implemented a surface water quality monitoring program beginning June 8, 2012. This interim report examines results collected up to June 16, 2012. Also includes a followup interim report which updates the June report with data collected up to July 6, 2012.

Workers were using a heavy-duty tow truck winch to pull a trailer out of a ditch. The cable broke, swung back and struck a 59-year-old male worker in the head. The objectives of the program are to map the distribution of outdoor air quality parameter concentrations in the vicinity of industrial facilities in the area, to detect the influence of elevation and topography on concentrations, and to identify some of the specific sulphur and hydrocarbon compounds that may be responsible for complaints from area residents.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Red Deer River and Bearberry Creek through Sundre. The study area includes an approximate 9 km reach of the Red Deer River and an approximate 7 km reach of Bearberry Creek. The design discharge for the Red Deer River is 1080 m³/s. The design discharge for Bearberry Creek is 145 m³/s. The study was prepared in January 1997. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.
