Description

To inform future land use planning in the Eastern Slopes of west-central Alberta, a review was conducted of key land use stressors and expected ecological responses. Altered fire regimes, forest harvesting, and linear disturbances are key stressors that, along with climate, and other environmental drivers, affect wildlife, hydrology, and other valued ecosystem attributes. The current status of each stressor in the study area was characterized from geospatial and other environmental datasets, expected ecological responses were summarized from reviews of the published literature, and future research and monitoring priorities were identified.

Description

The report is organized into two parts. Part one contains brief technical summaries of methods used to establish instream flow needs determinations in the South Saskatchewan river basin that provide for full protection of the aquatic environment. The purpose of summarizing these techniques within the following document is to provide a basis for the methodology used to evaluate impacts from alternative flow management scenarios. The second part of this document then explains the impact ratings methodology and demonstrates its application using example flow management scenarios applied to seven reaches of the Red Deer River.

The goal of this survey was to determine bat species diversity in a region of the Parkland in Central Alberta. Bat diversity in the Parkland Zone is poorly undestood. I conducted a survey of 3 sites along the middle Red Deer River and 2 sites on the Battle River, including Dry Island Buffalo Jump and Big Knife Provincial Parks. A total of 126 bats, 7 species (Eptesicus fuscus, Myotis lucifugus, M. evotis, M. ciliolabrum, M. septentrionalis, Lasiurus cinereus, Lasionycteris noctivagans) were captured using mistnets. Acoustic surveys were carried out, adding one more species (Lasiurus borealis) to the survey results.

A water quality study was initiated on the Red Deer River to address water quality concerns experienced by the Anthony Henday Water Treatment Plant during periods of runoff. The study was designed to document longitudinal changes in water quality in the Red Deer River between the Dickson Dam and the City of Red Deer, and to evaluate the effects of contributions from the Little Red Deer and Medicine rivers on Red Deer River water quality during spring runoff.

Temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) are important water quality variables which affect the viability of fish and other aquatic organisms. These variables can potentially be influenced by river flow. Understanding the effects of flow and other factors on these important variables is critical for river management, particularly in the face of increasing demands on river resources. In this report, simple empirical methods are used to investigate the relationships between water temperature, DO, air temperature, and flow at two locations in the Red Deer River. Available water temperature, DO, discharge, and air temperature data were compiled for a number of sites along the Red Deer River. Compliance with water temperature and dissolved oxygen requirements for fish were evaluated at all sites using daily data.
