Description

The implementation of the Emissions Trading Code in Ontario in 2001 introduced the use of market-based instruments for reducing emissions of nitric oxide and sulphur dioxide in that province. The intent of the Code was to help Ontario move ahead on economic and environmental objectives, including: reducing the deficit, ensuring a sound financial footing for environmental infrastructure and services, encouraging innovation, and enhancing competitiveness. This report reviews and assesses the impact of the Code, and presents some learnings for Alberta.
