Description

This report presents the results from the West Nile virus (WNv) Seroprevalence Study, undertaken by Alberta Health and Wellness during March through June 2004. During 2003, there were 275 confirmed human cases of WNv in Alberta. For every clinical infection there are likely many more undetected infections in humans since the majority of WNv infections have no symptoms. The study was conducted to estimate how many Albertans had actually been infected with the virus. The study also investigated the knowledge and attitudes of Albertans about WNv and about measures used to protect against infection.

Most health statistics have a geospatial component. In order for health measures developed or used by different organizations to be valid and comparable, the measures should reference the same geopolitical areas. This report outlines the methodologies employed by Alberta Health and Wellness in calculations of health measures within geopolitical boundaries, and compares these to methods used by Statistics Canada and other agencies. It includes an analysis of the differences in methodologies and the differences in health measures that these different agencies have created, and presents recommendations for changes to the manner in which health measures are calculated in the future. The report is part of a family of reports that illustrates and documents the geographic methods required to properly analyze health data in Alberta.

Uses data from the 1996 National Population Health Survey to investigate the prevalence of chronic pain among Albertans. While 11.2 per cent report some chronic pain, about 2.3 per cent characterize their chronic pain as severe. The proportion of individuals suffering chronic pain increases with age and decreases as income increases, but does not differ by place of residence. As self-reported pain levels increase, health status decreases and use of public health care services increases. The number of individuals suffering chronic pain is projected to increase dramatically in Alberta over the coming decades due to the aging of the population, even if the prevalence of chronic pain does not change.

A survey of the Alberta general public was conducted in August and September of 2002 to determine self-reported behaviours, perceptions and attitudes about healthy eating and being physically active. The survey was conducted prior to a promotional campaign by Alberta Health and Wellness to positively affect the behaviour and attitudes of Albertans in these areas, and was meant to serve as a baseline against which to compare changes in attitudes and behaviours after the campaign was launched. The survey results indicate a gap between the public’s perceived knowledge and perceptions about their effort in the areas of physical activity and healthy eating and their behaviour in these regards. The survey also reveals there are opportunities to motivate Albertans to increase healthy eating and physical activity.
