Description

Porsild's bryum is a small moss that is naturally rare and widely scattered throughout the northern hemisphere. In Canada, there are a total of 17 known populations with six of these occurring in Alberta. The Alberta Porsild's Bryum Recovery Plan identifies actions required to maintain or restore the current provincial status of the species. This report was commissioned to analyze habitat, substrate, and hydrological data collected from several Porsild's bryum populations and subpopulations in Alberta, and to interpret the findings as they relate to the goals and objectives of the provincial recovery plan for the species.

Description

The 2000 edition of the General Status of Alberta Wild Species represents a substantial improvement in the knowledge base of wild species in Alberta. Preliminary status assessments were prepared for 4 735 species of birds, mammals, herpetiles (amphibians and reptiles), freshwater fish, molluscs (gastropods and bivalves), odonates (dragonflies and damselflies), lepidopterans (butterflies and skippers), vascular plants, nonvascular plants and fungi in Alberta. Of these groups, Alberta, along with all other provinces and territories, agreed to report on eight to Environment Canada so that a national evaluation could be undertaken (see Background of the Present General Status Evaluation Exercise). These groups included the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fish, butterflies, orchids and ferns. The status of species in these categories is provided here.

This wildlife status report looks at the hare-footed locoweed, a tufted, low-growing perennial herbaceous plant with silvery hairs and pink, pea-like flowers endemic to southwestern Alberta and western Montana. It is considered as "may be at risk" in Alberta because of a small number of occurrences and restricted distribution. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

The Wainwright Dunes Ecological Reserve is administered by Alberta Community Development, Parks and Protected Areas Branch. Its 2 821 ha present a provincially significant landform of sand dune ridges, alkaline seeps and lake basins, and patterned fens which provide habitat for 19 provincially rare vascular plant species with provincial conservation Ranks within Alberta of S1, S1S2, S2, S2S3, S3W. This report presents the findings of a three phase, 20-day long, on-site inventory of rare plants in order to confirm their previously reported locations, populations and habitats, and to discover and document additional species locations within the Reserve.

This study reports a floristic and landscape survey of Ft. Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Park. The park spans about 6,600 ha and is located along the north side of the Athabasca River northeast of the hamlet of Ft. Assiniboine. Thirty person-days of fieldwork were conducted in June and August 1997; 48 0.03 ha plots were established and described; miscellaneous observations were made outside the plots. A total of 434 species of plants were found in the study area, of which 20 species (4.59%) are classified as provincially rare. Of the 20 rare species, 6 were vascular plants, 7 were mosses, and 7 were lichens. By taxonomic group, there were 258 vascular taxa, 90 mosses, 14 hepatics, and 74 lichens. The typical 0.03 ha plot contained 50.2 species (s.d. 18.9, median 49.5), with a maximum of 97 species and a minimum of 9 species/plot. The purpose of this study was to conduct floristic surveys, identify and document the location of rare vascular and non-vascular native plants, and describe the site conditions where observed rare plants occur as information for the management of the natural resources of the Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area; and to produce a report and a floristic site survey and rare native plant location map for selected, naturally vegetated areas of the Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area. The seven fenced pastures inside the Recreation Area were excluded from consideration.
