Description

The effluent of the Cold Lake/Grand Centre regional sewage lagoon appears to have a minor impact on the quality of the Beaver River. The concentrations of nutrient parameters increased slightly in the river downstream of the effluent discharge. Total phosphorus increased from 0.080 mg/L at Beaver crossing to 0.090 mg/L at the border and then steadily declined to 0.040 mg/L at Highway 26 in Saskatchewan. Dissolved phosphorus increased from 0.032 mg/L at Beaver Crossing to 0.051 mg/L at the border and then declined to 0.008 mg/L at Highway 26. Conductivity also increased downstream of the discharge, however, the low conductivity of the effluent itself did not suggest a cause and effect relationship. The numbers of total and fecal coliforms did not increase downstream of the effluent and did not appear to be influenced by the lagoon discharge. This report describes methods of analysis, benefits, limitations, and criteria associated with implementing an initial dilution zone (IDZ) for reducing possible impacts of effluents discharged to Alberta streams and identifies effluent discharge methods capable of producing an IDZ. This report is an extension of the Technical Manual on Procedures and Methods for Evaluating Water Quality Changes in Receiving Streams.

Description

Simulated and actual continuous lagoon discharge throughout the summer months was monitored at Kitscoty, Lamont, Mannville, Myrnam and Tofield. The parameters measured were Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Suspended Solids (S.S.), Total Phosphorus (P-T), total Kjeldhal-Nitrogen (TKN) and Ammonia-Nitrogen (NH3-N). High concentrations of these constituents were noted in April and May corresponding to the period of spring thaw with considerably lower concentrations from June to September. Loadings associated with continuous overflow in the summer were approximately one half of the value expected had the systems been permitted to drain during the spring runoff. Where twelve months detention was provided a less pronounced difference was noted. Fall drainage effluent quality was of good quality after continuous overflow throughout the summer.
