Indigenous communities in the oil sands region have expressed the desire to be equipped to participate in environmental monitoring and help answer their own questions about changes on the land. This report provides a look back at delivery of the Environmental Monitoring Technician Training Pilot in 2016-17, highlighting the success, challenges, observations and learnings. As part of a continuous improvement process, this information will help shape design and delivery in 2017-18 and the full program review after Year Three.

To address challenges resulting from the rapid pace of oil sands development, and to anticipate the impacts of continuing growth, the Oil Sands Ministerial Strategy Committee of the provincial government was directed by Cabinet in 2006 to develop a coordinated short-term action plan to address the social, environmental and economic impacts of oil sands development in local communities. This report is designed to support that initiative and to provide a foundation of facts and information about oil sands developments.

Presents the results of a project to conduct terrain and vegetation resource inventories of the Notikewin South area. This information was required as data for land use evaluations and resource planning and management. The Notikewin South study area is located in northwestern Alberta and comprises some 15,000 square kilometres of land bounded on the south and east by the Peace River, on the west by the Alberta-British Columbia border and on the north by the Notikewin River.

Description

Although the proposed mill would be one of the least polluting bleached kraft pulp mills in the world, and even though it would have economic benefits associated with it, the Review Board recommends that it not be approved at this time. The major reason for this recommendation is the effluent which would be discharged to the Athabasca River, and in particular, its content of chlorinated organic compounds and the cumulative effects this effluent and that from other mills would have on the Athabasca-Peace River system. The Alberta-Pacific would use technology which would reduce the chlorinated organic compounds to a low concentration. However, the limited available data indicate that there are already measurable amounts of dioxins and furans in fish in the river system near existing mills and extending to more than 1000 km downstream.
