Description

The 2000 edition of the General Status of Alberta Wild Species represents a substantial improvement in the knowledge base of wild species in Alberta. Preliminary status assessments were prepared for 4 735 species of birds, mammals, herpetiles (amphibians and reptiles), freshwater fish, molluscs (gastropods and bivalves), odonates (dragonflies and damselflies), lepidopterans (butterflies and skippers), vascular plants, nonvascular plants and fungi in Alberta. Of these groups, Alberta, along with all other provinces and territories, agreed to report on eight to Environment Canada so that a national evaluation could be undertaken (see Background of the Present General Status Evaluation Exercise). These groups included the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fish, butterflies, orchids and ferns. The status of species in these categories is provided here.

Description

The ferruginous hawk is designated a Threatened species under Alberta's Wildlife Act. Recent declines in the ferruginous hawk population in Alberta prompted an evaluation of the current technique for surveying ferruginous hawks. Recent population estimates have had relatively low precision with confidence intervals ranging from 30-50% of the estimated population. The primary objectives of this paper are to re-evaluate the ferruginous hawk population estimate by stratifying the sample units using the native prairie vegetation baseline inventory data, and to develop a standardised protocol for monitoring population trends of ferruginous hawk in Alberta.

This wildlife status report looks at the northern long-eared bat, a forest-dependent bat commonly found in eastern Canada and the United States and encountered less frequently in western Canada, including Alberta. At present, the northern myotis is designated as "may be at risk" in Alberta, based on the relative rarity of the species in the province and its apparent reliance on mature forest habitats. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
