Description

This Stewardship Report provides an overview of Weyerhaeuser - Pembina Timberlands’ (Weyerhaeuser) five-year performance on commitments made in the 2016 Forest Management Plan (FMP). Stewardship reporting is a mandatory process summarizing and comparing planned and actual performance with the intent of achieving objectives and targets (VOITs) identified in the approved 2016 FMP, at a point mid-way through the life of the FMP. The report identifies areas where adjustments may be required for VOITs deemed to be outside of the acceptable variance allowed in the FMP. Preparation of the Stewardship Report is an FMA holder responsibility. Other timber disposition holders are responsible for preparing and providing input to the FMA holder as it relates to their activities within the Defined Forest Area (DFA).

The Indigenous Lake Monitoring Program (ILMP) was developed in response to Indigenous communities’ concerns about the quality of lakes of local importance as well as the Community-Based Monitoring & Knowledge teams’ mandate to explore opportunities to work together with Indigenous communities to advance environmental stewardship. The ILMP aims to support and enable stewardship and management of Alberta’s lakes based on the best available Indigenous and scientific knowledge. From 2016-21, staff from CBM&K, Watershed Sciences and Watershed Monitoring units within the Airshed & Watershed Stewardship Branch worked with community technicians from four First Nations (Bigstone Cree Nation, Cold Lake First Nations, Whitefish Lake First Nation, Dene Tha' First Nation) to collect and report on water chemistry, physical measurements, and biological samples on seven lakes in Northern Alberta. Alberta Environment conducted a mobile air quality monitoring survey near livestock feeding operations in the Lethbridge area from September 1998 to July 1999, in response to concerns voiced by local residents about odours from livestock feeding operations as well as a proposal for a hog processing plant in the Lethbridge area. Following the public release of the Alberta Environment report and a critique by the Chinook Health Region, a request was made by Alberta Environment for this independent review of the Alberta Environment study and the Chinook Health Region critique.

A May 2017 report by the Bow River Working Group provided advice on new reservoir storage on the Bow River upstream of Calgary to reduce flood and drought risk, and identified three reservoir options that warranted further study. From November 2018 to spring 2020, the Alberta government completed a conceptual assessment of the 3 water storage options. This package contains the conceptual assessment’s final report and its appendices.
