Description

Since 1979, the province of Alberta has experienced severe timber losses to wildfire. Typically, these losses have occurred due to multiple ignition starts by lightning, followed by several weeks of high to extreme burning conditions. In 1982, following a severe fire outbreak, the need for a province-wide, systematic method to determine Initial Attack Resource requirements and deployment was addressed. the basic concept of the pre-suppression preparedness system was developed and implemented on a trial basis. The objective of this system is to minimize the potential for large fire losses through improved initial attack strategy.

This manual attempts to summarize and highlight information to assist in defining species / habitat relationships relevant to Alberta environments and for a number of Alberta wildlife species. The degree of specificity of the summaries, in part or whole, varies according to the background information available. Information must often be extrapolated from studies outside Alberta, or from specific regions in Alberta; this should be taken into consideration when applying this information. The summaries have been reviewed by species experts and their comments have been incorporated. Habitat distribution maps follow the summaries; a comparative Wildlife Habitat Region map for Alberta is provided.

This report summarizes management and research of wolf predation of big game in Alberta as background information for planning future management of wolves in the province. Widespread build-up of wolves occurred in Alberta during the 1930s and 1940s and concern for big game populations became common. Control of wolves was ineffective until the anti-rabies program of 1952-56 when numbers of wolves were drastically reduced.

Description

Stream crossings are designed to handle certain sized return period flows; temporary crossings to the 25 year standard while more permanent crossings are able to withstand 50 or 100 year return period flows. In this report, only methods to estimate 25 year peak flows were examined because very little data exists to estimate 50 or 100 year flows. Recommendations on the validity of each tested method were made based on the techniques practiclity, availability of input data and accuracy of peak flow estimate.

Description

The adaptability of native cultivated grasses to oil sands disturbances is being studied in a field trial in northestern Alberta. The native grasses originated from the mountains and foothills of the province. The trial was established on blended materials consisting of native sand, clayey overburden and peat. Nine native grasses and eight cultivated grass varieties were seeded in June of 1981. A description of the site, a summary of experimental procedures and first-year results are included in the report.

Black bear damages to beehives were investigated on 1608 complaints in 42,000 km² of the Peace River region of Alberta during 1972-79. During 5 years (1973-77) of intensive study calculated annual loss, representing most (""2/3) damages, ranged from 47 to 133 thousand dollars. During 1972-79 818 bears were removed from beeyards in the area by governmental leg-snaring or culvert-trapping; most were shot. Most bears were male (70%) and young (44% of 555 were 2 or 3 yrs of age). While electric fences effectively prevented damages (44 penetrations on 237 bear visits or 19%), taste-aversive conditioning did not. Seven of 15 bears translocated committed secondary damages during the same or the following 2 years. Six of 12 bears electroshocked committed secondary damages. Following experimentation in 1973, about 650 electric fences were constructed around beeyards through a government-beekeeper cost-shared program.
