This document summarizes what was heard from participants and presenters during the Indigenous Primary Health Care Innovation Forum, held in Edmonton on January 10 and 11, 2023. The purpose of the forum was to discuss current challenges in Alberta's primary health care system for First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, and to identify innovative solutions from other jurisdictions to address these challenges. Results of the forum will also inform inform the Indigenous Primary Health Care Advisory Panel's final report to the Minister of Health.

The PCN Review (the Review) was undertaken by Alberta Health as part of its internal oversight responsibility to ensure primary health care is being delivered in an effective manner. The Review involved an analysis of the financial practices and service delivery approaches of a sample of PCNs. The findings of the Review will inform ongoing work to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of primary health care service delivery in Alberta, in order to work toward the overall vision of Alberta’s Primary Health Care Strategy for “Albertans to be as healthy as they can be.”

Family Care Clinics (FCCs) are positioned to provide individual and family focused, comprehensive, quality, primary health care services across the lifespan, based on population health needs. The primary objectives are to: Increase and manage timely access to primary health care through same day access, extended hours of operation, on-call after hours and a triage function to provide direct access to most appropriate provider; Increase emphasis on health promotion, self-management, disease and injury prevention, screening and care of patients with chronic disease and complex needs; Utilize a collaborative interdisciplinary team approach working to full scope of practice; Improve coordination, continuity and integration of primary health care services.
