Description

This plan is the Approved Water Management Plan for the Battle River Basin (Alberta) and provides direction for the management of surface water and groundwater that has hydrologic connection to surface water within the Battle River Basin. The recommended options and strategies presented in this plan were developed through a Stakeholder Advisory Group, and are designed to strike a balance between a healthy aquatic ecosystem, a vibrant economy, and sustainable communities. Primary emphasis is placed on the need to live within the carrying capacity of the watershed, and the need to improve the health of the aquatic ecosystem.

Description

The Cold Lake-Beaver River Water Management Plan was adopted in 1985 to provide direction on managing water resources in the combined Cold Lake and Beaver River basins located approximately 300 km northeast of Edmonton. The intent of the plan was to provide for an adequate quantity and quality of water to meet the long-term user requirements of the basin. Over the past 20 years, the region has experienced increased industrial development, considerable population growth, and years of below-normal precipitation. Collectively, these factors have lead to record low water levels in the area's lakes, rivers and streams. This resulted in a need to assess the current situation, including demands on water resources in the basin, and update the 1985 to meet current and future water needs.

This policy takes a place-based approach to water management, guiding industry working in naturally water-short areas and areas with development pressures to maximize water conservation efforts. The ultimate goal of the policy and accompanying guideline is to reduce or eliminate allocation of non-saline water for oilfield injection, while respecting the rights of current licence holders.
