This report is the result of consultation, collaboration and future-focused planning for growth by Alberta Environment, industry, municipalities, and representatives from municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities in the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance.

Based on the input gathered through the Water Conversation, the Government of Alberta has identified a number of strategic actions in each of the four main topic areas. The strategic actions fall into two categories: short-term and long-term. The short-term actions are designed to respond to immediate priorities identified by Albertans. The long-term actions will inform the renewal of our Water for Life action plan, helping align the Government of Alberta's water priorities and initiatives.

This plan is the Approved Water Management Plan for the Battle River Basin (Alberta) and provides direction for the management of surface water and groundwater that has hydrologic connection to surface water within the Battle River Basin. The recommended options and strategies presented in this plan were developed through a Stakeholder Advisory Group, and are designed to strike a balance between a healthy aquatic ecosystem, a vibrant economy, and sustainable communities. Primary emphasis is placed on the need to live within the carrying capacity of the watershed, and the need to improve the health of the aquatic ecosystem.

Description

During the 1990s, guided by extensive public consultation, Alberta Environment reviewed water management policies and legislation and a comprehensive new statute, the Water Act, was enacted. Throughout the review process, Albertans made it clear that government needed to ensure sustainable water management and a healthy aquatic environment. The government agreed that effective and efficient water management planning is essential and made a commitment to develop a document to guide such planning, called The Framework far Water Management Planning. A major component of the Framework and a requirement of the Water Act is the Strategy far the Protection of the Aquatic Environment. The Strategy details the government's commitment to maintaining, restoring or enhancing the condition of the aquatic environment. Both the Framework and Strategy are presented in this document.
