Description

This policy is written by the Forest Management Branch of SRD, in accordance with the Timber Management Regulation and the Scaling Regulation. The purpose is to primarily to provide the ground rules under which the training and permitting of timber scalers shall occur in Alberta. This document will further define the requirements for course instructors, course content and duration, obtaining and retaining a scalers permit, and examination procedures.

As part of the Government of Alberta’s commitment to be open and accountable to the public, all ministries are required to prepare and make public three-year ministry business plans. The ministry business plan encompasses the department and all consolidated entities, and aligns with the strategic direction of the Government of Alberta. Each business plan includes a description of the ministry, desired outcomes, priority initiatives, and performance measures and indicators. Current and forecast budgeting information for the planning period is also included.

The guidelines should be applied with judgment that considers the specific physical and vegetative characteristics of the site, the types of existing land use at the site, and the types of land use proposed by the development.

This plan was developed jointly by the Forestry Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and the Parks Division of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. It was developed as part of a formal agreement by these two agencies to co-operate in forest genetic resource conservation and in response to a request by the Alberta Forest Genetic Resources Council, who had identified as an issue, the need for a provincial forest tree gene resource conservation plan. The plan is a technical document intended to complement and align with existing policy, particularly the Standards for Tree Improvement in Alberta. It provides a framework, including concepts for tree gene conservation and an initial work plan for implementing, coordinating and maintaining a provincial network of in situ reserves for 28 native Alberta tree species. Description

The Prairie Conservation Action Plan (PCAP) focuses on conserving the biological diversity of Alberta's native prairie ecosystems. PCAP recognizes the past and present role of ranching in preserving the prairie ecosystem. It also recognizes the heritage value of the prairie, along with its cultural and economic contributions. Through an approach of consensus and co-operation, the program encourages the incorporation of conservation ethics as part of all activities and management decisions on the prairies, particularly with community initiatives. PCAP is implemented through the Prairie Conservation Forum (PCF), which is a multi-stakeholder group that meets periodically to discuss and monitor initiatives for prairie conservation.
