Description

This document was developed by the Alberta Sport Plan Task Force and builds on the new National Sport plan and addresses the needs of Alberta's sport development system. The plan identifies 180 recommended actions which fall under 10 areas of emphasis, namely sport participation, excellence in sport, leadership and volunteer development, sport marketing and communication, business of sport, facilities, funding, ethics in sport/safe environment, research, development and planning and sport organizations and partnerships.

The management plan provides a series of action statements to guide decision makers toward the common vision of stakeholders who live, work and recreate along the Clearwater River Corridor. The management plan is effective because it has been formed through a collaborative decision making process where the needs and interests of stakeholders defined the final product. Through this process each stakeholder retained something of value, and conflicts between user groups have been identified and resolved to the satisfaction of all members of the Committee. The process although time consuming, reduces potential future conflicts among groups and lends greater support for management plan implementation. The management plan is neither legislative nor regulatory but is intended to inform government and industry decision makers. The direction and specific actions set out in the management plan are compelling because of the broad base of support they received from all participants in the process.

Under the leadership of the Provincial Health Office, four government departments have expanded and updated a coordinated provincial plan for responding to West Nile virus in Alberta. The purpose of the plan is to minimize the risk of WNv infection to humans. A number of coordinated activities will provide a comprehensive program for surveillance or monitoring for WNv in Alberta, communicating with the public and with professionals, and targeted mosquito control activities.

For many years, Alberta has extensively developed its energy minerals. However, the province also possesses a wide range of other minerals: base and precious metals, gemstones and industrial minerals. To enhance the economic benefit of these resources for all Albertans, Alberta's throne speech for 1999/2000 committed the government to develop a policy on non-energy minerals, streamline the administration of mining regulations, and improve geological information on minerals. Alberta Energy assembled a team from across government to establish the strategies for meeting these commitments. This document presents the results of the work of this team, which is a framework that outlines the vision, goals and strategic directions for ensuring orderly, environmentally responsible mineral exploration and development in Alberta.
