Description

This policy is written by the Forest Management Branch of SRD, in accordance with the Timber Management Regulation and the Scaling Regulation. The purpose is to primarily to provide the ground rules under which the training and permitting of timber scalers shall occur in Alberta. This document will further define the requirements for course instructors, course content and duration, obtaining and retaining a scalers permit, and examination procedures.

The bull trout, the provincial fish of Alberta, is a native species that occurs in all of the major river basins of the province. It has been designated a Species of Special Concern because of the declines in distribution and abundance, as well as continued threats from habitat alteration and introduced competitive species. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of restoring and maintaining viable, self-sustaining bull trout populations throughout the majority of the species' historic range in the province, and to once again provide some measure of harvest opportunity for the species. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. In response to stakeholder concerns of a decline in the quality and quantity of trophy rams available in some areas, SRD has completed an assessment of 35 years of trophy sheep registration and aerial survey data for bighorn sheep. The assessment indicates the harvest levels need to be adjusted to bring them into line with the management guidelines in the Management Plan for Bighorn Sheep in Alberta 1992. There are no immediate regulation changes planned, but we clearly need to work with provincial hunters and the outfitter/guides to achieve a better balance with our objectives.
