Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services recognize that community water fluoridation effectively prevents tooth decay, especially among people who are most vulnerable. It offers significant benefit with very low risk and reaches all residents who are connected to a municipal water supply. Therefore, Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services endorse community water fluoridation as a foundational public health measure to prevent dental disease and improve oral health.

Description

Prior to 2008, each Regional Health Authority in Alberta developed its own specific infection prevention and control (IPC) services and programs. When patient-safety gaps in IPC services were identified in 2007, it was evident that a provincial, coordinated approach to IPC and hand hygiene was needed. In 2008, the ten-year Alberta Infection Prevention and Control Strategy and the Alberta Hand Hygiene Strategy were released. The strategies outlined objectives and proposed actions to improve IPC hand hygiene across Alberta’s health system and in Alberta communities. In 2013, at the mid-point of implementing the strategies, a series of external reviews were conducted to assess how well the goals and objectives of the strategies were being met. The reviews found that significant progress has been accomplished, but that more can be done.

Cold Chain refers to the processes and procedures that maintain optimal temperature and light conditions during the transport, storage, and handling of vaccines. The purpose of the Alberta Vaccine Cold Chain Policy is to define vaccine cold chain practices in Alberta; and to define the roles and responsibilities of Alberta Health Services, community providers, Alberta Health, and pharmacies in implementing the Policy.

The purpose of this plan is to provide the framework for the province of Alberta to deal with a blood shortage while maintaining congruency with the National Plan for the Management of Shortages of Labile Blood Components. Similar to the National Plan, the Alberta Plan will maximize the effectiveness of response to any crisis which impacts the adequacy of the provincial blood supply. The roles and responsibilities are outlined for Ministry of Health, Alberta Health Services (AHS), Alberta’s Provincial Emergency Blood Management Committee, and the various zones/hospital facilities within AHS.
