Alberta's Provincial Health Agencies Act establishes the acute care, primary care, continuing care and mental health and addiction health services sectors. The amendments are contained within the Health Statutes Amendment Act (HSAA) tabled on May 14, 2024, and which received royal assent on May 30, 2024. The HSAA enables the transition from a single regional health authority to an integrated system of sector-based provincial health agencies. This ministerial order initiates the transition to a refocused health care system.

Description

An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) allowance has been issued that recognizes out of province first aid certificates for workplace first aid training courses recognized by another Canadian province or territory, which comply with CSA Standard Z1210-17, First aid training for the workplace - Curriculum and quality management for training agencies. Out of province first aid certificates covered by the allowance will be considered as demonstrating proof of approved first aid training until the certificate expiry date. Work site parties have the flexibility to follow the original first aid course requirements in the OHS Code or to follow the allowance.

Inter-jurisdictional Recognitions (IJRs) provide flexibility by recognizing standards adopted in different Canadian jurisdictions. These may be issued where there is an agreement between different jurisdictions, where recognizing another jurisdiction’s standard appropriately protects the health and safety of workers in Alberta while also supporting inter-provincial trade and labor mobility. Section 246 of the OHS Code outlines which respiratory protective equipment is allowed to be used at work sites in Alberta. An IJR has been issued that expands what is allowed to be used, which recognizes respiratory protective equipment approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
