The proposal is to develop a northeast mine pit extension (NPE Project) to sustain production rates of the approved North Mine Pit at the Horizon Oil Sands Processing Plant and Mine. The project is expected to include the following changes to the Horizon Mine: extension of the approved north mine pit to include the NPE Project area (1,015 ha); additional overburden storage areas (2,396 ha); and updated closure and reclamation plans. The project would consist of three central processing facilities, natural-gas-fired cogeneration at Phases 1 and 3, associated field facilities, and related infrastructure. The location is approximately 10 km southeast of Conklin, Alberta in the Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The EIA was deemed complete in 2013.
