BMPs maintain or improve a farm’s soil, water, air and wildlife habitat resources, and therefore contribute to the farmstead’s overall sustainability and to the economic and environmental health of the farm family, as well as the surrounding landscape and community. Since the farmstead is the heart of your operation, it is important to learn how to identify areas of potential risk. This manual offers you options for managing those areas of risk so that your farmstead remains the key to the health of your family, your livestock and the environment.

This document is a guide for the waste management industry in managing waste and hazardous waste in Alberta. It provides guidance to sections of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Waste Control Regulation. Extensive lists of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes are provided, in order to eliminate the need for laboratory analysis of these wastes. Generators are encouraged to use any available knowledge of their waste to reduce the amount of analysis required in classification. This guide holds generators responsible for classifying their own waste and for determining if the waste is prohibited from landfilling.
