Description

Alberta Transportation's BIM Level 2 Inspection Manual outlines the various detailed inspection and testing techniques that the Department uses to manage known issues at specific bridge sites. Some of these techniques are implemented as part of a regular Level 2 inspection program carried out at select sites. Other techniques are typically used on a one-off basis when required to provide additional information necessary for the proper management of the structure and/or site. It is intended that this document be used as both a training manual for new inspectors and an ongoing reference source for seasoned practitioners. Although the manual's main focus is on the proper rating of the various bridge elements, it also touches on the setup of the BIM system, inspection preparedness and techniques, and maintenance recommendations.

The Alberta Transportation bridge inspection program is an essential part of a comprehensive inventory, inspection, maintenance, and data management system called the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (BIM) System. The inspection component, introduced in 1987, allows for regular scheduled inspections at all bridge and culvert sites. These inspections provide information to the system that allow inspection management, maintenance programming, budget development, strategic planning, and life cycle planning so that the safety of the traveling public and the investment in bridge structures is optimized. Occasionally, the regular Level 1 inspections highlight problems that require more detailed inspections in order to determine the proper course of action to address a problem. Heat straightening on damaged structures shall be carried out in accordance with the FHWA manual with additions and exceptions described in this document.
