The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arises from the direct and indirect reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by offsetting fossil-fuel derived energy through the generation of heat, power and/or electricity from biomass combustion facilities and potentially combusting material that otherwise would have undergone anaerobic decomposition in a stockpile, storage or landfill. It is written for the energy from biomass project developer; some familiarity with, or general understanding of, generating energy from biomass is expected.

This quantification protocol is written for those familiar with anaerobic digester projects. Some familiarity with, or general understanding of, the operation of these projects is expected. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arises primarily from the indirect reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from displacing fossil fuel based electricity, thermal energy or natural gas in gas transmission systems with the biogas from the anaerobic digestion of materials (primarily agricultural materials such as manure, silage, dead animal stocks, etc). There is a small opportunity to generate direct offsets from direct combustion or diversion of waste from landfills, if the full flexibility of the protocol is employed.

Description

This quantification protocol is applicable to the quantification of direct and indirect reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the implementation of streamlined waste heat recovery projects. The protocol quantifies the emission reductions from the avoidance of fossil fuel consumption resulting from the capture and utilization of heat that is currently being wasted. The waste heat recovery may be transferred into the project site where it is utilized, or may be recovered and used within the project site.

Second, the protocol quantifies reductions associated with pig husbandry practices that increase efficiency by generating less manure per unit of pigs raised.
