A completed municipal heritage survey provides a window on a community’s social and architectural history. This booklet provides detailed information about three aspects of completing a heritage survey: fieldwork, including photographic documentation; historical research; and completing the Heritage Survey Form. The publication is one in a series designed to help Albertans create and implement local heritage programs to protect the historic places they value and wish to preserve. Each publication in the series describes the processes involved in identifying, evaluating and managing locally significant historic places in Alberta.

A completed municipal heritage survey provides a window on a community’s social and architectural history. Using the Alberta Heritage Survey Form helps ensure that this information is gathered in a consistent way across the province and over time. This booklet provides detailed lists of the codes needed to complete the Alberta Heritage Survey Forms and is meant to serve as a reference tool to identify and record important information about resources included in a heritage survey. Under the Historical Resources Act, Alberta’s municipalities have the power to designate historic resources within their jurisdictions as Municipal Historic Resources. Some municipalities have found it helpful to create a heritage inventory that includes all historic places that are eligible for designation within the municipality. To guide municipalities in the selection of resources for inclusion in a municipal heritage inventory or designation as Municipal Historic Resources, the Government of Alberta's Historic Resources Management Branch has developed a standardized, three-part evaluation process, which is outlined in this booklet. This publication is one in a series designed to help Albertans create and implement local heritage programs to protect the historic places they value and wish to preserve. Each publication in the series describes the processes involved in identifying, evaluating and managing locally significant historic places in Alberta.

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a groundwater containment and treatment system was constructed to contain and treat impacted groundwater. The purpose of the 2008 groundwater monitoring program was to collect groundwater data in order to assess the performance of the remediation system.

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. Presents the results of groundwater monitoring at the historic Turner Valley gas plant. The objective of this program was to improve the understanding of groundwater flow at the site and delineate the distribution of contaminants of concern along the boundaries of the site. The Turner Valley gas plant, western Canada’s first natural gas processing and refining facility and the site of Alberta’s first major oil and gas discovery, is a provincial historic resource and a national historic site.

The Turner Valley gas plant represents the commencement of the oil and natural gas industry and its material contributions to a prosperous Alberta. The Turner Valley Gas Plant Resolution Advisory Panel was announced in January 2006 to advise the Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation, and Culture as to the viability of the plant as a provincial historic resource and its potential for development as an historic site. The Panel’s recommendations include the recommendation that the Minister consider the Turner Valley gas plant as a viable historic site open to the public for tours, contingent on additional considerations outlined in this report.

Description

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. In July 2008, iron oxide seeps were observed at the site. This series of documents details the response and investigation into the source of these seeps.
