Families, households and marital status is the third data release from the 2011 census of Canada taken on May 10, 2011. This highlight will provide an overview of the living arrangements and marital status of Alberta residents, the general structure and characteristics of Albertan families, and the living arrangements of children (under age 15) in Alberta.

Between 2004 and 2006, Alberta’s economy expanded at an exceptionally rapid pace, attracting a record number of people to the province. The surge in oil sands investment and rapid growth in the Fort McMurray area helped create a perception that Fort McMurray was the main destination for migrants to Alberta. However, a detailed examination of migration trends reveals a more complex picture. This issue in the Demographic Spotlight series looks at migration flows over the past decade for three key Alberta census divisions: Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray), Calgary and Edmonton. It finds that from 2000 to 2010, 80 per cent of migrants to Alberta settled in Calgary and Edmonton, while only four per cent of the total net migration settled in Wood Buffalo.
