Description

This dataset contains the outlines of the evaluated areas for shale- and siltstone-hosted hydrocarbons in Alberta from the Energy Resources Conservation Board/Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2012-06. These evaluated areas are for the following units: - Duvernay Formation, - Muskwa Formation, - Montney Formation, - Basal Banff/Exshaw study area, - North Nordegg study area, and - Wilrich Member. For information on the extent and characteristics of the shale and siltstone units and the overall resource assessment approach see Energy Resources Conservation Board/Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2012-06.

Description

This GIS dataset is part of a digital compilation of the bedrock geology of NTS areas 72E, 72L, 73D, and 73E. It is one of the datasets used to produce Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Maps 567, 568, 569, and 570. This dataset represents the compilation of existing geological maps and original geological mapping by AGS staff. Mapping included field observations and creating three-dimensional models of subsurface stratigraphy based on the interpretation of geophysical logs from oil and gas wells. Each three-dimensional formation surface was projected to a model of the bedrock surface, and the intersection formed the first approximation of the position of the geological contact at the base of the surficial deposits. We adjusted these preliminary contacts to honour outcrop data and the interpretation of the bedrock unit immediately below surficial deposits in individual wells. The Cold Lake oil sands area - Township 56 to 69, Range 1 to 11, west of the 4th Meridian, falls within the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP). As part of Alberta's Land-use Framework, LARP was developed in 2012 to set the stage for robust growth, vibrant communities and a healthy environment within the region. One of its implementation objectives is to balance the economic development of oil sands and impacts on the ecosystem and environment. This is to be achieved through an enhanced science-based monitoring for improved characterization of the environment and to collect the information necessary to understand cumulative effects. This quality evaluation dataset was produced for 2007 Landsat data to identify possible misclassified areas due to sensor noise, cloud, haze, and cloud shadow. These areas are assigned to 'bad pixels' or value '1' in the quality evaluation dataset.

The Cold Lake Oil Sands area, Twp. 56 to 69, Rge. 1 to 11, W 4th Mer., falls within the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP). As part of Alberta's Land-use Framework, LARP was developed in 2012 to set the stage for robust growth, vibrant communities and a healthy environment within the region. One of its implementation objectives is to balance the economic development of oil sands and impacts on ecosystem and environment. This is to be achieved through enhanced science-based monitoring for improved characterization of the environment and collection of the information necessary to understand cumulative effects. The anthropogenic footprints shapefile contains a compilation of developed and mixed developed footprint classes extracted from the land-use/land-cover classifications data from 2005 to 2013, published by Alberta Geological Survey. They can be used as a baseline for planning, managing and monitoring surface infrastructure needs and impacts.

Alberta Geological Survey created a coal and coalbed methane (CBM) database to capture and manage CBM data. The database compiles different sources and contains information on 7923 wells (15,200 formation picks, 37,357 coal picks, 495 coal analyses and 363 vitrinite reflectance measurements). From this parent dataset, individual coal zone was evaluated. This record describes the Mannville Coal Zone's calculated gas in place in BCF/Section.
