This report describes a project undertaken as a step towards a better understanding of the geographic differences in health and health determinants in Alberta. It describes the development of geographical regions smaller than the Health Region but larger than Enumeration Areas suitable for small area analysis in Alberta. The report is part of a family of reports that illustrates and documents the geographic methods required to properly analyze health data in Alberta.

This resource presents the findings of a2002 survey which aimed to measure the public’s opinion, beliefs, and knowledge of various aspects of HIV, Hepatitis C and sexually transmitted diseases. The survey was the ninth in a series of studies conducted for Alberta Health and Wellness by the Population Research Laboratory at the University of Alberta, and expands the focus from HIV/AIDS to include Hepatitis C and sexually transmitted diseases.

Description

Most health statistics have a geospatial component. In order for health measures developed or used by different organizations to be valid and comparable, the measures should reference the same geopolitical areas. This report outlines the methodologies employed by Alberta Health and Wellness in calculations of health measures within geopolitical boundaries, and compares these to methods used by Statistics Canada and other agencies. It includes an analysis of the differences in methodologies and the differences in health measures that these different agencies have created, and presents recommendations for changes to the manner in which health measures are calculated in the future. The report is part of a family of reports that illustrates and documents the geographic methods required to properly analyze health data in Alberta.

The Premier’s Advisory Council on Health recommended that Alberta Health and Wellness work with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive health workforce plan. This comprehensive health workforce plan report presents the Comprehensive Health Workforce Planning Committee’s recommended vision, principles and framework for comprehensive health workforce planning at all levels. Detailed background information on health workforce planning is found in the Appendix Report. The Appendix Report also includes definitions of workforce planning, summary information, and recommendations from several recent reports related to health workforce planning and illustrates the common themes across the reports.

This report summarizes the results of a community exposure and health effects assessment undertaken in Fort Saskatchewan to assess the impact of airborne contaminants on the health of the population. The report describes the population and personal distribution of exposure to airborne chemicals and particulates in the city of Fort Saskatchewan and the surrounding region. Using a personal exposure model, the relative contribution of various exposure sources and pathways to airborne chemicals is estimated and associations between exposure to airborne chemicals and human health effects are described.

Uses data from the 1996 National Population Health Survey to investigate the prevalence of chronic pain among Albertans. While 11.2 per cent report some chronic pain, about 2.3 per cent characterize their chronic pain as severe. The proportion of individuals suffering chronic pain increases with age and decreases as income increases, but does not differ by place of residence. As self-reported pain levels increase, health status decreases and use of public health care services increases. The number of individuals suffering chronic pain is projected to increase dramatically in Alberta over the coming decades due to the aging of the population, even if the prevalence of chronic pain does not change.
