Presents an inventory of previously-identified potential water storage sites and diversion systems in the province. Implemented as part of the provincial Water for Life Strategy. The inventory was based on a literature review of previous studies that identified potential sites and no site investigations were conducted.

Reliable water supplies for a sustainable economy is one of the key goals of Water for Life, Alberta’s strategy for water sustainability. This policy takes a place-based approach to water management, guiding industry working in naturally water-short areas and areas with development pressures to maximize water conservation efforts. The ultimate goal of the policy and accompanying guideline is to reduce or eliminate allocation of non-saline water for oilfield injection, while respecting the rights of current licence holders.

This report summarizes the findings of the Waterworks Facility Assessment Study that was undertaken to identify short-term and long-term solutions to source, treatment and operational challenges in the supply of safe, secure drinking water in the Province of Alberta. One of the key objectives was to examine the potential for expanding the role of regional water delivery with a resulting reduction in the number of "stand-alone" water facilities. The intent being that a reduction in the total number of water treatment facilities in the Province would correspondingly reduce the number of systems at risk and through economies of scale improve the level of service to the public.
