This document focuses on hazards and controls for workers providing public health services, with a focus on public health inspectors. Much of this information may also be useful for other workers providing some services in homecare or community settings. Other handbooks which may be of interest to public health workers include those designed for emergency responders as well as those designed for homecare workers.

This document has been developed to assist physicians and their staff, as employers and as workers, to understand and maintain compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation and Code to ensure the health and safety of themselves, their co-workers and their employees. The focus is on the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries of workers.

Description

In November 2004, Alberta Health and Wellness hosted a forum to support dialogue among provincial stakeholders in nursing. Emerging from this forum was the document entitled, Alberta’s Nursing Workforce Strategy. On 9 November 2005, the Alberta Nursing Education Administrators (ANEA) hosted a nursing workforce planning forum in Edmonton, AB, to begin to address some of issues identified at the November 2004 forum related to supply and demand. Participants in the 2005 forum included representatives from the three professional regulatory bodies, ANEA, government, regional health authorities, continuing care employers, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIB) of Health Canada, and Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). This report reflects the contributions of forum participants.

Description

Alberta’s Physician Resource Planning Committee (PRPC) has a mandate to provide advice on issues related to physician resource planning, and to develop and maintain a comprehensive Physician Resource Plan for Alberta. The resource plan sets a direction that will guide Alberta toward having the right number of physicians, with the right skills in the right places, to serve the needs of Albertans. In 2006, the Committee continued its work and, through this report, is providing the first of several updates to the Minister of Health and Wellness. This year 2006 report provides a five-year update on success in meeting PRPC’s identified physician resource targets in the year 2000 PRPC report. PRPC’s findings are available to inform other physician policy setting bodies, and will be used to fulfill some of the reporting requirements under the 2004 Federal Provincial Health Accord.

The Alberta Nursing Workforce Strategy is built upon the framework of the Alberta Health and Wellness Comprehensive Health Workforce Plan and incorporates the principles, guidelines, goals, thrust, partnership and stakeholder relationships and building blocks of that framework. This report provides a snapshot of existing and ongoing nursing workforce issues as discussed by stakeholders on November 10, 2004. Based on stakeholder input, recommendations for moving forward, along with suggested leads for responding to recommendations, have been developed and approved by the Nursing Advisory Council of Alberta (NACA).
