Reports on research conducted to determine if using grain precleaners makes economic sense. Results show that using grain precleaners to improve the grade of grain they are shipping does provide a positive economic benefit. However, there is a net economic disadvantage to using the precleaner to remove dockage in an attempt to reduce freight costs on grain with average dockage levels.

The expansion of hog production increases land requirements for hog manure application. Independent of this need is the fact that more farmland is being converted to low disturbance seeding, a management practice similar to zero-tillage. Low disturbance manure injection presents an opportunity to meet the hog producer's need for more land and presents the grain grower with an alternative fertilizer application system. This research update presents results of testing of seven soil openers for their ability to effectively inject high volumes of hog manure while satisfying the 30 per cent soil disturbance guideline for low disturbance seeding.

Trelleborg tractor tires showed up in Canada in 1994, advertised as torque transmitting flotation tires that have the advantages of bias ply sidewalls and radial ply footprints, and have been aggressively marketed as replacements for radial tires. Tests conducted by the Alberta Farm Machinery Research Centre suggest that potential customers should carefully consider what they expect to gain from Trelleborg tires before adopting them.

Presents the results of a 1997 examination of harvest methods to assess their suitability for whole-crop harvesting. The project examined the performance of a relatively new harvest technique known as the stripper header. Five methods of harvesting, including the stripper header, were then examined for their ability to efficiently collect and process grain, chaff and straw. Costs and revenues for each method were determined, and a net harvest product value was determined for each system by subtracting the total operating costs from the value of the commodities produced. In general, it appears that the economics of the system improves as the amount of processing in the field is reduced.
